To be velveteen
means to be loved.
Why velveteen? In the children's story The Velveteen Rabbit, a horse toy and stuffed rabbit have a conversation about becoming "real".
"It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become real."
The horse then tells the rabbit that when you begin to wear out, you become loose and shabby, edges worn over time. But that also means you have been loved. And that no matter how seemingly 'ugly' one may appear, it will never matter to someone who already understands the purity of that love.
As you peruse through this media log, I am sure you can gather that some of these beloved things will be entirely antiquated— and maybe even to the general public, obsolete. But they were real to me then. They are real to me now. I am sure you will be able to feel that love indubitably.
